Mission Statement

The West Elk Hockey Association (WEHA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the growth and development of ice hockey in the Gunnison Valley of Colorado. We strive to provide a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for all participants across all levels of experience and skill, while fostering a love for the game and encouraging personal growth through sportsmanship and teamwork.

Position Overview

The Director of Hockey Operations, reporting to WEHA’s Executive Director, will be responsible for overseeing the operations of a comprehensive and wide-ranging hockey program covering hundreds of hockey players and their families. The Director will focus on player development, coaching excellence, and community engagement through the programming put in place by the Board and the Executive Director. This role involves the year-round management of day-to-day operations, coordinating with and managing the needs of coaches and volunteers, and ensuring alignment with WEHA’s mission and strategic goals. During certain times of the year, these responsibilities are likely to be concentrated on nights and weekends and the position will have the scheduling independence necessary to meet those needs. The Director will serve as a key leader within the organization, working closely with the Executive director, the Board of Directors, coaches, volunteers, families, community partners, ice facility managers, referees, and other hockey organizations throughout the state and region.

Key Responsibilities

Program Management:
Implement and operationalize WEHA’s hockey development programs for all age

groups and skill levels (youth, beginner and adult).

  • ?  Oversee and manage preseason, in-season, and postseason activities, including practices, games, tournaments, and skill development sessions both at home and away.

  • ?  Execute WEHA’s strategic plan for player and coaching development.

  • ?  Coaching and Staff Management:

    • ?  Help to recruit, train, and manage coaching staff and volunteers.

    • ?  Provide resources and support for coaches, including practice plans and skill

      progression advice.

    • ?  Conduct regular evaluations and feedback sessions with coaches to ensure

      high-quality instruction and player development.

  • ?  Community Engagement and Promotion:

    • ?  Act as an important liaison between WEHA and the community, fostering

      relationships with local businesses, sponsors, and other stakeholders.

    • ?  Promote the association's programs and events to increase visibility and

      participation in person and via Social Media.

    • ?  Participate in conflict resolution meetings between player, parents, and WEHA

      staff.

    • ?  Participate in scheduling meetings with ice facility managers or rink managers.

  • ?  Administrative Duties:

    • ?  Work closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors to ensure

      our Hockey operations are aligned with WHEA’s mission and strategic goals.

    • ?  Ensure compliance with USA Hockey and other regulatory bodies' rules and

      regulations.

    • ?  Manage operational budget responsibilities, including financial planning and

      fundraising initiatives.

      Required Skills and Qualifications

  • ?  Preferred Experience:

    • ?  Played hockey at a competitive high school level or higher.

    • ?  Coached hockey at a competitive level.

    • ?  Passion for hockey and developing hockey for all ages throughout the Gunnison

      Valley.

    Compensation

  • ?  Salary range: $48,000 - $58,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
